We invite you to join this exciting project and use your imagination to rethink cultural visits together for people with English as a second language.
The Sustainable Co-Production Project with HMS Unicorn
‘Ukrainians Together’ visited HMS Unicorn during the project Ukrainians Together Kids in August 2023. The Team of HMS Unicorn was happy to organise the tour and tell us a story of the oldest Dundee battleship. Kids’ feedback was that a tour of the ship was one of the exciting parts of the project and parents shared that they didn’t even know about the museum. You can find more about visit on the Ukrainians Together Facebook Group.
As a part of ongoing development of the museum, HMS Unicorn discussed with Ukrainians Together how the museum might offer a deeper and more meaningful experience for Ukrainian families while collaborating on improving the museum experience for people with English as a second language and from outside the UK.
In march 2024, Museum Galleries Scotland announced that HMS Unicorn project with Ukrainians Togehter to be awarded grant through the Sustainable Co-Production Fund. Similar project will be delivered in four museums and art galleries across Scotland – Paxton House, Glasgow School of Art, David Livingstone Birthplace, and Glasgow Life Museums across Scotland.
In core, the HMS Unicorn and Ukrainians Together project aims to co-produce exhibits and materials with Ukrainians who have relocated to Dundee and other Tayside cities following the Russian-Ukraine war. During cultural visits members of the Ukrainian community will develop transferable skills including language and social integration, as well as explore Scotland’s heritage together.
Bring Together aims to build bridges between local museums and the Ukrainian community. As a steering group, Ukrainians will help to improve cultural visits for people with English as a second language. By providing cultural and language support we want to ease communication. That will help participants to share their experiences and ideas.
Introduction Session on 8 July 2024
We were amazed by receiving so many inquiries to take part in the project, more than 60. The project has a limited number of places that allow it to accommodate only 15 participants. We are grateful for the enormous interest. We will work together to make the project a real success for all new communities in Scotland.
HMS Unicorn welcomed the Ukrainian community for the introduction session on Monday, 8 July. Caitlin MacLeod from HMS Unicorn made a brief introduction of the project and nearest plans to organise visits to Verdant Works, Discovery Point Dundee, Victoria & Alber Museum Dundee, Perth Museum and Perth Art Gallery. The first visit will take place in August.
